Historical Background of CanningThe city of Canning is named after Lord Canning who was the Governor General of India from 1856 to 1858 and Governor General & Viceroy from 1858 to 1862. Lord Canning wanted to establish a port in this place as an alternative to Kolkata and as a rival to Singapore. With a shipping inspector Henry Piddington, he went on to locate a grand Canning with a strand, homes and hotels. However, the new port town just reduced to a "bleached skeleton" in the year 1867. The place of Canning is also historically known when in 1962 a southward line was opened from Beliaghata station to Port Canning under the Calcutta and South-Eastern Railway.
Geography of CanningCanning city of West Bengal is situated at 22.32° North latitude and 88.67° East longitude with an average elevation of 4 meters or 13 feet above the sea level. The city remains hot in summer season when the highest day temperature reaches more than 40° C. However, the average summer temperature here is between 30°C to 40°C. The inhabitants of this region get relief from hot summer through monsoon season which is largely determined by the nearby presence of Matla River. This season remains mainly from July to September. Further, the winter season arrives at Canning with the start of December month and it lasts up to end of January. Moreover, the average literacy rate of Canning is 70.98 % in which male literacy is higher than the female literacy rate but, however, it has been increasing for the last few years.
